Departure Time

8:15 AM
After hotel pickup in New Orleans, you're driven to the Oak Alley Plantation, located among the Great River Road sugar plantations alongside the Mississippi River. On arrival, stroll under majestic, 300-year-old oak trees leading up to the antebellum Big House, and take a tour of the opulent mansion with a guide dressed in period costume. The Greek Revival architecture was built in 1837 and later restored in 1925.

Wander the 25-acre (10-hectare) grounds at your own pace during your free time. Visit the blacksmith shop, snap photos of antique farm equipment, or peruse exhibits on slavery and the Civil War. Grab lunch and beverages at the restaurant or cafe (own expense) before the tour moves to the swamp.

Next, board the bus and drive to the site of your swamp tour. On arrival, board a 16-passenger airboat with stadium-style seating for a high-speed adventure through the swamp. You'll have unobstructed views of wildlife, including an up-close look at the star attraction: alligators.

Your captain is experienced at searching out these reptiles, even during hibernation in colder months. The airboat, propelled by a large fan that blows air from the back of the vessel, can produce speeds of up to 35 mph (56 kph). You'll ride in just inches of water into parts of the swamp that are inaccessible to traditional boats or vehicles.

The airboat ride was amazing. The plantation was beautiful but I would’ve liked the option to drive my own vehicle. I saw you could after the fact.

When the guide opened the second story doors to the alley, it took my breath away. I appreciated the emphasis that the exquisite architecture was possible with the work of the slaves.

An amazing tour for the following reasons: 1. FRIENDLY, PATIENT BUS DRIVER: The bus driver provided some wonderful tips on restaurants, dining etc on Canal St as he drove the bus towards the destination. He was friendly, easy going and very clear on instructions. 2. HOTEL PICK UP AND DROP OFF : So convenient, timely in nice buses. 2. PERFECT TIME TO EXPLORE EVERYTHING: Oak Alley Plantation was 2.5 hours long which I thought was the perfect amount of time to explore a small plantation. The tour took 20 mins. We had over 2 hours to walk around the slave quarters, take photographs on the grounds, eat lunch, shop at the gift shop and enjoy a lazy walk back to the bus. It was perfect timing and there were not a lot of people around. 3. SWAMP TOUR: The Cajun tour guide was hilarious, wonderful and full of life. We were very lucky to see a lot of gators swimming around us. The swamps were beautiful and the airboat ride was quick, fun and you got to see so much stuff around you.

I usually don’t post reviews because it takes too much time but I really feel that these tours deserve it. My boyfriend and I had such an amazing experience on these tours! The boat ride was so fun and our captain, Rocky was very knowledgeable and experienced. The plantation tour was great as well — very informative and the grounds were beautiful. I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone visiting.
