Your historical tour of Scotland begins with morning pickup in central Edinburgh in a top-of-the-range, 16-seat Mercedes mini-coach. Over the course of the day, follow in the footsteps of the ancient Romans. Arrive first at the town of Jedburgh for a stroll and visit to the city’s magnificent 12th-century Augustinian abbey, then continue to Carter Bar at the English-Scottish border. Take a quick photo break before heading south of the border through scenic Northumberland National Park.

Stop at Steel Rigg, one of Britain’s richest territories for Roman archeology. Enjoy free time to view and explore Hadrian’s Wall—the immense 73-mile-long (117.5 km) cobbled fortification built by Emperor Hadrian to keep Scottish ‘barbarians’ out of the Roman Empire. Learn more about the Roman presence in ancient Britain and stand where Romans guard did more than a thousand years ago.

Afterwards, stop at Vindolanda where you can explore the museum and grab some lunch (own expense) before heading to Birdoswald for a photo stop. Here, get an up-close look at one of the best preserved Roman forts on Hadrian’s Wall. Hear about the fortification features and some recent excavations that have taken place nearby.

From Birdoswald, begin your return trip, arriving at the drop-off point on Waverly Bridge in the evening.

This was our favorite day trip while visiting the UK. James, our guide, made the trip truly memorable with his extensive knowledge, humor, and anecdotes. We loved getting out of the city and seeing some of the beautiful countryside. Seeing the Jedburgh Abby, Hadrian's Wall, and Vindolanda was an incredible experience that we would highly recommend.

I have to say I was let down by this Rabbie's Trip. I have used them before and loved the tour. My guide and driver were wonderful and extremely engaging. They aren't the issue. The issue with this tour is the Itinerary. Our first stop was at the ruins of an abbey. However, with winter hours they did not open until after we left. The drive to the border, with stop, and to Hadrian's wall was exactly right. There were things to see and a short walk along the wall the was perfect. The next stop was at Vindolanda. These are an ancient Roman ruins. We were given three hours here. There is no way anyone could spend 3 hours there! And we had to pay for our own entrance fee. So if seeing the ruins wasn't your cup of tea you would sit in a cold bus for 3 hours. After that waste of time we drove to another section of Hadrian's wall. It was about 30 meters long with a sign. Nothing really there at all. Then a scenic drive back in the dark, couldn't see anything. I can understand how this trip would check some boxes for many people. But there needs to be a change for the winter hours/light. Honestly you just paid to drive out to the country side and back.

Tough Climb

My 9 year old grandson and I took the tour in July 2019. It is a good tour and a full day with a knowledgeable and friendly driver/guide. One caution I have is for folks who are not in pretty good health and physical conditioning; you may not get to see Hadrian's Wall. A close-up visit to the wall requires a steep walk down a hill that is about a 200 foot drop in elevation over an eighth of a mile and then a climb up an ancient stairway carved into the mountain to about a 500 foot elevation and then back over everything to get to the parking lot. My grandson was able to do it, but I had to just watch while he did. The other parts of the tour were very good, especially the visit to the expansive archeological dig and excellent museum at Vindolanda. Vindolanda was by itself worth the trip especially if you are a fan of archeology or Ancient Rome. In that case, I recommend this tour.
