Departure Time

8:00 AM
Get picked up at your hotel in Dubrovnik and hop in the air-conditioned vehicle for the 3-hour journey up the stunning Dalmatian Coast to Split, Croatia's second-largest city. As your meander up the coast, drink in the eye-poppingly beautiful views of the coastline and learn about the history of the area from your guide.

In Split, take a 90-minute walking tour of the city, starting at Diocletian's Palace, a beguiling complex that is today part of the fabric of the city with shops and restaurants inside the former palace grounds. Head inside the palace (at own expense), a UNESCO-listed site, to get a closer look. Visit Peristyle Square and the Cathedral of St. Duje (St. Domnius), an octagonal-shaped structure that was originally meant to be Diocletian's mausoleum.

Listen to your guide regale you with tales of the eccentric Roman emperor, Diocletian, and see some spots where scenes from the hit HBO series Game of Thrones were filmed.

After the tour, take three hours to see Split on your own. Get some tips from your guide or set off to wander the streets, perhaps tuck into a hearty seafood lunch at a local restaurant (at own expense).

Eventually meet up with your guide and begin the ride back to Dubrovnik. The trip concludes with a drop-off back at your hotel.
Pass By:
Meet your guide at your central Dubrovnik hotel in the morning. Then settle into your comfortable seat aboard an air-conditioned vehicle and travel north to Split, roughly three hours away. As you travel, gaze out at the gorgeous coastal scenery and listen to your guide talk about the day’s itinerary.
Stop At:
On arrival, hop out of your minivan and set off on a walking tour of the coastal city's sights. With your guide leading the way, see the UNESCO-listed Diocletian’s Palace, a colossal imperial residence in the heart of Split Old Town. Head inside (own expense) for a stroll around Peristyle Square and to see the Cathedral of St Duje with its magnificent bell tower, as well as the Temple of Jupiter, a beautifully preserved Roman monument. As you wander, hear tales of the extravagant Emperor Diocletian and learn how the palace was featured in the hit HBO TV series Game of Thrones as the city of Meereen. After touring the palace, continue on to Republic Square (Prokurative), a Mediterranean-style plaza lined with striking neo-Renaissance buildings, and pass by the Ivan Meštrović Gallery. Then, navigate your way through the historic town’s narrow passages and hidden streets to Riva, a beautiful promenade that stretches the entire length of Split Old Town. Following your 1.5-hour walking tour, enjoy around three hours of free time to continue sightseeing independently. When you’ve worked up an appetite, head to a local restaurant for a traditional Dalmatian lunch (own expense). When the time comes, meet back up with your guide and group, and then return to your minivan for the drive back to Dubrovnik. During the journey back, stop at a roadside stall to pick up organic mandarins, honey and other local produce to nibble on (own expense). Your day trip concludes with a drop-off back at your hotel.

Tanya’s in depth history of the areas we visited, Mario’s fabulous driving skill in the rain and Lidija’s narrative along with legends added up to a wonderful day of discovery.
Short Visit to Split

If you just want to see what Split looks like because you are short of time, this tour will let you see the center town of Split. Our driver and guide, Ivan and Luka were very nice.

Our tour guide was Vladimir, It was a long drive to Split and we expect something from the tour guide to let us know what we see along the way but he was very quiet , just keep on driving til we reach the place. It's just like we hired a driver to take us to the place. we found out it was his first time touring tourists , so no experience at all ! LOL

Enjoyed walking through the city, but probably didn't need a guide

As we were staying in Dubrovnik, we wanted to be lazy and have a vehicle take us from Dubrovnik to Split, hence we chose this tour. There were 7 of us in the group and we all fit into a mini-van. As my husband and I were the last to be picked up, we had the front seats. However the middle seat it quite squishy and not enough leg room. The 3hr ride both ways went quickly and we got to see the beautiful coast line for the first part. Driver was nice and gave us tidbits of information. This was an expensive tour for what it was. Actual tour in Split was only 1 hour long. I didn't think the local guide was great and was expecting more about the history of Diocletian's Palace and surrounds. We had 2.5 hours to explore the town ourselves which was great. It was good to be comfortable, but if you want to save money, take the public bus or stay in Split and get another local guide.

Mixed thoughts on this. We travelled 8 hours in total on the day to spend only 3 hours in Split! I was really looking forward to visiting Split but disappointed by having a poor tour guide. The walking tour was cut to 1 hour rather 90 minutes and we were only given 3 hours altogether in Split instead of 5 hours. Left me feeling extremely disappointed as the tour guide was very boring and not engaging. We weren't given enough time to explore as free time was reduced to under 2 hours and we had to take time out of that for lunch. Now looking back it seems the tour company prefers to leave Split by a certain time latest 2.30/3pm and this dictates how long you get in Split rather than what you're sold in the tour description.

It didn't happen. Both Viator and the local operator did not want to know. Monarch airline failed early 2nd October 2017, as a result I had to rebook flights. The earliest I could get was 3rd October 2017. I contacted viator and the local operator on 2nd October and they kept referring me to one another. As a result of which someone pocketed my 150 which I wanted to transfer to other trips. I suggest you book with with other operators.

Other than the palace, there is not much to see. We did enjoy the marina and lunch. It was a long bus ride from Dubrovnik.

A long way for a relatively short period of time, but a lovely place to visit, have lunch and see the unique Roman remains still lived in to this day. Views from the cathedral bell tower were great. Our driver, Robert, was excellent - his spoken English was great and he explained lots about the history of Croatia and life there today as we went along.
