Every August 20 Hungarians celebrate St Stephen’s Day, the anniversary of both Hungary’s founding and the canonization of their first king, Stephen I, in 1083. Budapest takes center stage for the country’s festivities, hosting a fireworks show, religious events and parades.

Hop aboard your boat along the banks of the Danube and settle in with a drink from the unlimited bar. Pass the illuminated Castle District, the Parliament Building and the historic Chain Bridge as you glide along the riverfront. You'll also spot Gellért Hill, crowned by the Liberty Statue, the Gellért Baths and other monuments, all impressively lit at night.

Traditional Hungarian fare will be served buffet-style as you go, complemented by a glass of local wine, beer or a soft drink. While dining, enjoy live Hungarian folk music performed by the Hungária Folk Orchestra.

Afterward, make your way to the open deck as the fireworks are launched from Gellért Hill. Soak up unparalleled views of the display as the fireworks illuminate the city sky.

After the show, your cruise will conclude with drop-off at your original departure point.
Itinerary
Stop At:
Danube River
Step onto your comfortable sightseeing boat on the Danube River in the evening and relish the thought of the forthcoming celebrations. St Stephen’s Day on August 20 marks Hungary’s founding, and Stephen I, the country’s first king, who was canonized on this day in 1083. An important public holiday, Hungarians celebrate the day with unashamed gusto, with Budapest taking center stage and hosting religious processions, shows and spectacular evening fireworks. As you start your cruise, enjoy a drink from the unlimited onboard bar and take in the illuminated sights along the riverfront. Marvel at the magnificent neo-Gothic Hungarian Parliament Building, view the sparkling Castle District, and gaze in awe at the floodlit Chain Bridge as your boat slips beneath it. While you cruise, enjoy a generous hot and cold buffet showcasing some delicious, classic Hungarian dishes. Wash it all down with a glass of wine, beer or a soft drink, and enjoy the passing views as you eat. Keep an eye out for rocky Gellért Hill, crowned by the Liberty Statue and see the Gellért Baths and other monuments, all beautifully floodlit at night. While you relax, listen to traditional Hungarian folk songs played by members of the Hungária Folk Orchestra. Enjoy the rousing tunes and after dinner, head onto the upper, open deck as your ship drops anchor for the fireworks show. The fireworks are launched from Gellért Hill above the river, so you'll enjoy unparalleled views of the display. Watch spellbound as the fireworks fizz, crackle and burst high in the night sky, illuminating the city’s rooftops, domes and spires. This would have been a magical tour but for the lack of air-conditioning or fresh air. It was a hot night and where the dining room was had no air-condtioning and no windows or doors to open for air. The waiters had perspiration falling off them and their shirts soaked. We ate quickly and went up on the deck to cool down. Standing for 1.5 hours was not a pleasure. I am sure had it been a cooler night, the outcome would have been more pleasurable. Suggest the installation of Windows that open or air-con.

While the food and customer service were great, for the price we paid and the poor time management it could have been much better. First, we departed and ate an hour after we arrived because we were waiting for a party of 7 to arrive. I wouldn't have mind waiting but they did not open the buffet for everyone and did not supply bread to hold us over. Second, we arrived back to the dock nearly 25 minutes later which meant people missed shuttles back to their hotels.
