Begin your tour with a guide meet and greet at Zoologischer Garten train station or Hackescher Markt train station. Ride to the Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum in Oranienburg.

More than 200,000 people were imprisoned in Sachsenhausen between 1936 and 1945. At first, the prisoners were primarily political opponents of the Nazi regime. However, people that were defined by the National Socialists as racially or biologically inferior were later included.

By 1939, there were a large number of citizens from the occupied European states imprisoned here. Tens of thousands of people died of starvation, disease, forced labor and mistreatment, or they were victims of the systematic extermination by the Schutzstaffel, or the SS. Thousands of other prisoners died during the “death marches” that followed the evacuation of the camp in April of 1945. At that time, approximately 3,000 sick prisoners, along with the doctors and nurses who had stayed behind in the camp, were freed by Soviet and Polish soldiers.

This tour features a visit to the punishment cells, gallows, gas chambers and burial pits located inside the prison. Hear stories of prisoner bravery as well as the chilling atrocities that took place at the camp, which now serves as a national memorial to the prisoners who lived and died here. Your tour ends with a return train trip to Berlin.

Worth having a guide

This was a wonderful tour. The meeting spot was easy to find, the train was straightforward, and the walk through town felt much shorter than a half hour. Once at the site, the tour guide gave so much information about the role of Sachsenhausen and the horrors that occurred there. I would recommend a trip here to anyone interested in learning more about Berlin’s role in World War II, and I believe we got much more out of the visit by having a professional guide.

Amazing, informative tour by Martin

Martin was a fantastic tour guide with amazing insight and knowledge of the place. He was entertaining and made the few hours the tour took feel like minutes. The tour was personal, informative and incredibly well performed. We were impressed by the the entire tour, but a little extra element was at the end, Martin took the time and made sure each and every tourist on the tour had the correct train route to get back to where they wanted to fo, which was super helpful. If you are looking for a tour that is full of information, entertaining at the same time, with a tour guide who really knows his stuff and adds his own personal touch, I would recommend this to you!

Our tour guide Campbell was the best!

Campbell our tour guide was the best tour guide for this tour. This is one of the best tours I've been on, all thanks to Campbell. I wish I could give this tour a 10 star rating. Campbell gave us the full background of the history behind concentration camps starting from 1919. This background was very necessary in understanding why the camp was built, he gave us a great history lesson and explained everything in detail at the camp. He gave a very unbiased and subjective view of the history. Most tour guides make the mistake of giving their personal political opinion on such tours however Campbell gave a very neutral view and didn't favor any side. I suggest everyone to do this tour if they have the time and resources to do so. The tour was excellent and the tour guide was a big reason in making the camp history alive again. Great job!
