Get off the beaten path in Berlin as you investigate the city’s thriving counterculture neighborhoods and unique ethnic areas on this guided walking tour. It’s a great way to go beyond the typical tourist sites to get a sense for some of the unique cultures that give this thriving German capital its unique flair.

Start your walking excursion in central Berlin. Over the course your walk, you have the chance to check out emerging areas such as Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, Prenzlauer Berg, and Mitte. In Kreuzberg, stop to explore the thriving Turkish community that calls the area home, along with Berlin’s Jewish quarter. The area is peppered with a unique collection of urban farms, guerrilla gardens, alternative art galleries, and organic markets, all signs of the area’s growing popularity.

As part of your exploration, you also have the chance to learn about Berlin’s unique food culture. Discover currywurst, a popular style of fried German sausage seasoned with curry-flavored ketchup. Hear about Doner kebab, Turkish-style gyros that first gained popularity in Berlin. Then stop by Prater Garten, known as the city’s oldest beer garden.

Continue your walking excursion with a deep dive into the history of various counterculture movements in Berlin history. Discover the 1960s student protest movement, the rise of the Baader-Meinhof group in the 1970s and the growth of punk and the May 1 riots in the 1980s. Music and art have all played important roles in Berlin’s creative and subcultural scene. Hear about the Love Parade, a famous electronic dance music festival, along with the reggae, hip-hop and rasta fans of Yaam Beach. Then admire some of the incredible range of street art that dots many of these neighborhoods’ walls and alleyways.

Finish your tour at Yaam Beach, leaving with a newfound appreciation for the incredible diversity of Berlin’s artistic and ethnic communities.

I think the description in Viator is a bit out of date, but it was a fantastic walking tour of Berlin neighborhoods combined with a passionate discussion of many of its former residents, particularly its artists, and their association with Berlin history.

How art and the punk rock scene contributed to Berlins identity

Learning about the history of Berlin and the relationship between Art, the punk rock scene and social change in Berlin. Being in places where history was being made provided authenticity to the unfolding story of Berlin from its early days to the present.

Anecdotes of anarchy and art!

Our guide Jake was an ex-pat version of Ben Elton in patter, mannerisms and manic energy, full of a multiplicity of stories and anecdotes about his beloved adopted city. The four hours we spent strolling around parts of the anarchic former East Berlin flew past and gave us an appetite to return to see more — which we duly did the next day. Well worth it! Thanks!

Utterly fascinating tour. We learned things about Berlin we had no idea about (and we’ve been several times) Jake was a brilliant, clever, warm guide whose passion for the city really made it come alive. Would recommend this tour 100%

A good alternative tour. Jake very knowledgeable and entertaining. A history of Berlin to present day, interspersed with a hint of socialism. Time went very quickly, certainly did not feel like 4 hours, but that would be credited to Jake's ability to keep the tour interesting. Would definitely recommend tour. especially with Jake as you tour guide.

Jason was a great guide, very entertaining and kept us laughing throughout. He was really informative and threw in some personal anecdotes along the way. We saw areas of Berlin we probably would not have seen if not for the tour.

T he guide was excellent. She gave us very detailed information about the three districts we visited. What I like most is that we were taken to places that the ordinary tourist is not able to discover bythemselves. Ok, Not really my Tour - I purchased this for my daughter as she did not want to do the trip to Sachsenhausen. She enjoyed it immensely, and by all accounts had a great time (you know it's not easy to pry this sort of Info. out of your Offspring. ) SO, if it was good enough for her I can only recommend it as worth doing.

Good way to explore Berlin. The guide pointed out a lot of cool places that are not covered by other tours (e.g., flea markets, beer gardens) and was very informative about street art. The tour is a bit long and could have edited some of the Friedrichshain stops.

I love this tour and have met people in this tour as well. The tour guide is very knowledgeable about the history of arts they don't call it graffiti and berlin. And he is not even from Germany. Highly recommended.
