The Basics

While you could duck into the Kunsthistorisches Museum for an hour, strategic planning helps make the most of even a quick trip. Choose a laser-focused visit based around a couple of collections, or opt for a longer stay with time to wander between galleries. Since the vast museum can be overwhelming, a guided tour ensures you don’t miss the highlights, while a skip-the-line ticket helps save time.

Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and Imperial Treasury of Vienna
Lovely museums however there is no need to prebook as you get to the museum and turn in your voucher for tickets anyway.

Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and Imperial Treasury of Vienna
The museum is absolutely incredible but instead of going first thing in the morning, we went after seeing something else so we didn’t have the energy to see all the exhibits. This ticket should be issued as a two day use to give older people like us the chance to split the tour over two days like some of the other tickets we purchased.

Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and Imperial Treasury of Vienna
You get exactly what you sign up for which I LOVE. The tickets were easy to obtain and we had no issue when entering either museum. Both museums require more time than we gave them though so I recommend giving yourself a full day rather than a half day.

This Kunsthistorisches is amazing - excellent art collection and plenty of seats in each room so you can relax and enjoy the paintings. Put aside a few hours to enjoy this.

Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and Imperial Treasury of Vienna
Located in the historic centre this is a superb gallery that includes extraordinary collections of Egyptian, Greek, Roman antiquities, stunning art collection as well as temporary exhibitions. Impressive scale and somewhat overwhelming at times in terms of grandeur and splendour. It seemed to have one of the most popular coffee rooms in Vienna. Although I could not get a seat the patisserie looked out of this world.

We couldn't recommend these important sites more highly. The Museum and Treasury visits are a must if you only have two days as we did.

Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and Imperial Treasury of Vienna
Well worthwhile tour for those interested in imperial Vienna and the Habsburg Dynasty. The highlight of the Treasury was the display of the Habsburg imperial crown and the coronation regalia. I enjoyed this tour because I was my own 'guide', and I could see the things that I was interested in, and could spend as much time as I liked at each display.

Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and Imperial Treasury of Vienna
This is a must do in Vienna. The Kunst Museum is filled with amazing sculptures, ornaments etc. and most of them are in gold or ivory. There is also an Egyptian area but we did not go to that. Imperial Treasury is a little hard to find but look for the red and gold archway on the right hand side before you get to the Spanish Riding School if you are coming from the Kunst museum. The treasures are mainly royal regalia, crowns etc. There are also a lot of costumes and ceremonial robes to look at.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • The museum’s side entrance, located at Burgring 5, has barrier-free access for wheelchairs.

  • Wheelchairs are available on loan at the museum—reserve in advance.

  • Vienna City Card holders enjoy discounted access to the museum, although some tours of Vienna include admission.

When to Get There

While a steady stream of visitors keeps the Kunsthistorisches Museum busy year-round, the expansive galleries rarely feel crowded. To avoid the most popular times, though, go on a weekday. In addition to the permanent collections, rotating exhibitions display pieces from around the world—check the museum’s website for upcoming events.

Visiting the Kunsthistorisches Museum Café

From the black-and-white floor to the soaring ceiling, the dome hall is a lovely setting for the Kunsthistorisches Museum café. Breakfast is served on weekends and public holidays, and the regular menu includes a mix of Austrian and international items. Reservations (which you can make on the museum’s website) are a must, and you’ll need a museum ticket to enter the café.
