The Basics

The gardens of Versailles are famous for their spectacular musical fountain shows and evening fireworks displays, held throughout the summer months.

Most visitors opt to discover Versailles on a half-day tour from Paris. With wait times lasting up to two hours, it’s worth booking skip-the-line entrance tickets if you plan to visit both the palace and gardens. You can explore the gardens on a self-guided tour, but visiting with a tour guide can be helpful if you have limited time or want to learn more about their history.

Wonderful tour!
Great tour! Without the bikes, you would not have been able to cover half the amount of ground we did. Picking our lunches at the market and then having a picnic was such a unique experience. Our guide GiGi, was fantastic! Not only was he very knowledgeable about the entire Versailles grounds, he was very funny and friendly! Would definitely recommend this tour to others!

Versailles Palace & Giverny's Monet House Guided Visit with Lunch from Paris
Van was modern, clean, comfortable. Guide Francois was knowledgeable, responsive, courteous, fun, we’ll-prepared so all went smoothly.. Giverny is charming beyond words. Lunch restaurant, in a garden area beside an old mill, was exceptional—food was delicious, served artistically, accompanied by wine, served meticulously. We were a small group (7) and soon knew each other! The Versailles tour was probably too brief for others, but I was still enchanted with Giverny, so it was long enough.

Versailles Palace Skip the Line Small Group Guided Tour
I had a wonderful tour and the Paris TRIP tour operators were very helpful when I got confused about my ticket. The gardens tour is only included when there is no magic fountain show. In any case I spent hours wandering about the place and could have spent much longer. Our guide Olivier related a number of interesting stories about the palace and about French nobility. I learned a lot. This was definitely a highlight of my trip to France.

Versailles Palace Guided Tour with Gardens & Fountains Show from Paris
Our guide was super knowledgable, and I learned so much more than the standard audio tour! I would say the half day is plenty. The gardens are so big you would need to rent a golf cart there to see it all.

Versailles Palace & Gardens Guided Tour from Paris with Optional Fountain Show
The tour was great. Alex, our guide was friendly, entertaining and knowledgeable. We had plenty of time to see the castle. Due to a delay in the trains, we could not initially have the complete time that was scheduled for the gardens. However Alex got us back in after the tour so that we could explore them at our pace which was really nice. Overall I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to visit the palace.

Versailles Palace & Gardens Guided Tour from Paris with Optional Fountain Show
This place is huge. We loved the decor inside and out. The garden is beautiful. I would recall the tour package because you learn so much. I liked that they have a place to rent golf carts to drive through the garden. I recommend this because it is a very large garden.

Versailles: Food & Palace Bike Tour
The team that runs this tour is hands down, the best group. The tour guides are very knowledgeable, personable, and truly love the job they do. I experienced an air bnb crisis in the middle of the tour and the team worked with me and my bnb host to resolve the issue, provided me with multiple options, and I was able to return to the tour! Lola, Stu, and Nikki are the best and when I return to Paris, I will look for more of their tours!!

Hervé was a terrific guide -- funny, intelligent, quick, engaging, animated, personable, and charming. He was a great guide to the long and fascinating history of Versailles. And our lunch was excellent. I can't think of a better way to experience the magic and majesty of this place!

When to Get There

The Versailles Château Gardens are open year-round, but by far the most popular time to visit is in high season (April to October) when Musical Fountains Shows, Musical Gardens, and Fountains Night Shows take place. On show days an admission fee is charged, and it’s best to visit early in the morning or just before closing to avoid the busiest periods. Visiting in low season means smaller crowds, but for conservation purposes the fountains are switched off, the groves are closed, and many of the statues are covered.
