The Basics

Originally surrounded by fortress walls (some of which can still be seen today), Old Town is the jewel of the city housing its art, culture, food, and history. Most tours of the area explore the major sites of Old Town through its winding streets and interconnecting passageways.

Be sure to check out the Tallinn City Museum and the St. Nicholas’ Church, both of which host an extensive collection of medieval artwork. Or consider exploring Toompea Hill for spectacular views of Old Town with a glimpse of the Balctic Sea in the distance. And while you’re there visit the vibrant, onion-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.

Tallinn: Old Town and Kalamaja small group walking tour
We were only with the 2 of us, so, our guide (Julia) picked us up in our hotel. Immediately she started telling about Tallinn. Unbelievable how much information she shared with us. AMAZING!! There was a really nice conversation between us during the whole tour! We had quite a few good laughs! I can only recommend this touroperator and Julia more specific. Thanks!!

Private Shore Excursion: Tallinn Old Town Walking Tour with Round-Trip Transfer
Maarja was so informed and she came with props. Maarja taught us about old Europe and how it turned into modern day Europe. Our interest in how someone who lived under Soviet survived was satisfied. She explained her life before / after Soviet rule. She walked us through old Talinn and explained how everything was from "beginning" until now. We absolutely enjoyed our time with her. As we were on cruise ship time we didn't have a lot of time but Maarja somehow showed us everything we wonted to see and figured out how to give us shopping time. I feel like I just got a taste of Estonia and because Maarja's private tour I have a desire to go back and maybe stay for a few day to see more. I would definitely use her for a longer tour if I did.

Private Shore Excursion: Tallinn Old Town Walking Tour with Round-Trip Transfer
Fabulous tour with Maarja Laiapea with Saku Travel. Excellent value for tour. Maarja really made our family feel comfortable and was very knowledgeable about the city. It was so nice to have our own personal tour guide. We were very happy with pickup and drop off at the port. She recommended a delicious restaurant for lunch and even made reservations for us. After lunch she met us at meeting spot and we were taken back to the port, so nice to not have to worry about transportation. Truly a wonderful time!

Tallinn Small Group Walking Tour: Old Town Only
Our guide, Stanislav, was fantastic. Provided great history and insights into Estonian history. Showed us multiple interesting locations off the main pathways, locations and history we would have never seen on our own. When our ferry arrival was going to be delayed, we contacted the tour company, and Stanislav actually met us at the ferry station to save time. If you go to Tallinn and do not take this tour, you are really missing out on a wonderful experience.

Tallinn Small Group Tour Old Town and Kadriorg
Dennis was truly amazing - I really enjoyed our walk and tram ride through Tallinn. The weekend I was in town there was a festival in the old town and Dennis took me to the tourist information center so I could get more information. I enjoyed all the knowledge he had about the town - I especially enjoyed visiting the Russian Orthodox Church. Dennis was willing to take photos of me while we were on the tour (I was traveling solo) and he did a GREAT job! Riding the Tram to the Palace and its gardens was fun and the gardens themselves are outstanding. He showed me where the Kumu Museum was and the next day I visited the Zoo and the museum. (Note that you must be able to show proof of vaccination to enter the museum) This is a great way to orientate yourself to Tallinn and learn about the city - I highly recommend it!

Great introduction to Tallinn and Estonia

Tour of Tallinn Old Town and visit to The Seaplane Harbour
Great introduction to Tallinn and Estonia. Our guide was very knowledgeable on the history. Estonia has a brutal past, and has had numerous invaders, gaining its independence from the Soviets in 1991. Its amazing the old town has survived - its very beautiful. After our walk in the old town, we then went down to the Sea Plane museum past the old prison - which sounds chilling. The Sea Plane museum is fantastic. Beautiful building and great food for a late lunch. We finished our tour feeling that we had a better understanding of the history of Estonia, and maybe, just maybe an insight into the culture, as well as the courage, fortitude and stoic nature of the Estonians.

When to Get There

Tallinn, and Estonia in general, is still a relatively less touristy destination, so you won’t be in the crowds of other major European cities no matter what time of year you go. For warm weather and plenty of fun festivals and city-wide celebrations visit Tallinn during the summer. Or for a fairytale-like wonderland, consider a bundled-up excursion in winter.

Dining in Tallinn Old Town

One of the best things to do when visiting Vanalinn is to experience the dining and nightlife scene. The main Old Town Square is filled with restaurants and cafes though they tend to be a little pricey. Instead consider wandering the town’s sidestreets to find a smaller place to stop for a bite to eat. And for those looking to mix history with their cuisine, check out Olde Hansa for a medieval dining experience.
