Lower Manhattan

New York City, New York, USA, 10013

The Basics

If you’re a history buff, check out the African Burial Ground, North America’s largest known excavated burial ground for free and enslaved Africans. Or just offshore, visit Ellis Island, through which 12 million immigrants passed between 1892 and 1924. And the National September 11 Memorial & Museum commemorates more recent history. Alternatively, soak up the sun in Battery Park, cruise along the Hudson River on the free Staten Island Ferry, score bargains at Century 21, or browse the boutiques of the South Street Seaport. At dinnertime, take your pick from Tribeca’s hip restaurants.

Many walking tours of Lower Manhattan stop by the most important sites, ensuring you don’t miss a thing. Fans of the hit musical Hamilton can even opt for a specialized walking tour of places associated with the Founding Father.

Everyone was so friendly....
Everyone was so friendly. We got lost on way and arrived only 15mins b4. This was no problem. Had a fantastic experience seeing all the sights with audio to help point out landmarks. First time in a helicopter very smooth flight would recommend to anyone who is on holiday in NY

Discover Subway Secrets Underneath Lower Manhattan Shared Tour
The amount of abandoned underground stations was amazing! Plus I never understood the complexity of the NY subway before, and how it ties to the history. Rayn did an incredible job of explaining and answering all our questions (which were many).

Hamilton Live! Walking Tour in lower Manhattan
Huzzah! One of the best tours I’ve been on in NYC and I’ve taken numerous tours of the city over the years. The guide, in re-enacting Alexander Hamilton, took such thoughtful care in taking his audience on a travel back in time. It was clear that he wanted his “guests” to be both entertained and informed. If you are choosing NYC tours, this will be your best choice!

Hamilton Live! Walking Tour in lower Manhattan
Our "Hamilton" was excellent and shared a lot of information about the man and his life and the politics of the time and what it was like, generally, for folks that lived in NYC in Alexander Hamilton's day. We had a mix of ages in our group and he engaged us all. Fun times!

We were the only people on the tour with Mandy. She is fun and knowledgeable, tells tales and history seemlessly. Highly recommended.

Great way to see Brooklyn and few other areas of Manhattan. Going over the bridges is awesome to do on a bike. Tour guide Bob was great as well. Lots of knowledge. Definitely recommend.

When to Get There

For a glimpse of the global financial trade in action, head to Wall Street on a weekday morning to watch traders going about their business. Conversely, weekends, when the banks are closed, can be eerily quiet. Any day of the week, however, is a good time for shopping or checking out the cluster of bars that have recently sprung up, such as the Dead Rabbit and Weather Up.

Lower Manhattan Architecture

While in the neighborhood, you’ll see the grand New York Stock Exchange and the 18th-century Federal Hall—commemorating the site where the first United States Congress convened and George Washington was sworn in as president. Lower Manhattan is also home to Santiago Calatrava’s ultramodern World Trade Center Oculus and One World Trade Center—the tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere, offering 360-degree views of New York City and beyond.
