The Basics

Auschwitz-Birkenau is comprised of Auschwitz I—the site of a visitor center, museum exhibitions, artifacts, and multimedia displays—and Birkenau (or Auschwitz II), left almost exactly as it was when the Nazis abandoned it at the end of the war, complete with gas chamber ruins. Group and private tours with round-trip transportation from Krakow Old Town typically cover both sites and are available in several languages. A visit to Auschwitz can also be combined with the nearby Wieliczka Salt Mine.

Great experience
Great experience all around. The driver picked us up at our hotel right on time. Once at the museum he got our tickets and connected us with our guide. She was very knowledgeable and informative. After the tours of both camps the driver brought us right back to the hotel. Zero stress.

Auschwitz & Birkenau: Live-Guided tour with transportation and hotel pickup
The driver was very entertaining and kind on the way to Auschvitz, he ensured we are well taken care of. The experience in the museum is beyond words, the numbers are abstract, millions were killed, but when you see the mountains of shoes, luggages, croaches and hair left behind it's a vivid image of horrors too appalling to aknowledge.

Auschwitz-Birkenau & Salt Mine: One Day Private Tour
Our third time here. The shock and sadness only get harder by each time. How this could happen, i will never accept or understand. Pool souls. May they rest in peace.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Plan to spend roughly 90 minutes at each of the sites, Auschwitz and Birkenau.

  • An official visitor’s center can be found at the entrance to Auschwitz I.

  • Although you can arrive independently, guided Auschwitz tours can allow for better understanding, plus insight from a tour guide.

  • Cell phones are not allowed in the permanent exhibition buildings and photos are not permitted in Room 5 of Block 4 or the cellars of Block 11.

  • The museum discourages visits from children under the age of 14.

  • While wheelchairs are available at the visitor center, strollers are only permitted outside of the blocks and other structures in Auschwitz I.
