The Basics

Inverness Castle has long played an important role in Scotland’s story, and is a must-visit for history buffs. Thanks to its elevated setting at the summit of Castle Hill, it also affords views over the river and Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands. Most visitors explore independently, strolling around the grounds to see a Flora MacDonald statue and informational plaques detailing the site’s history. It’s a good place to get a primer on local historical information before venturing to nearby sites with Jacobite connections, such as the Culloden Battlefield or Urquhart Castle. Guided sightseeing tours of the city typically include a glimpse of the castle exterior, while hop-on hop-off bus tours also stop at the castle site.

Tour 2 Cawdor Castle, Inverness, Culloden Battlefield and Loch Ness
We enjoyed the tour. Only complaint is about the communication of the starting time. We failed to receive the text message about the starting time and ended up having to wait for the bus for one and half hour. They should let us know how they are going tom inform us the starting time. Better yet, why not starting the tour half hour after the cruise ship starts letting passengers get off the ship. This is what the tours of other ports did.

Tour 2 Cawdor Castle, Inverness, Culloden Battlefield and Loch Ness
This tour was the best on our cruise! We drove past Loch Ness. Having read the Outlander series, I was thrilled to see Culloden and the standing stones. Cawdor Castle was great. Our tour guide was exceptional - so informative and interesting. The price was surprisingly low for the quality!! guide was exceptional. She was so well informed and interesting.

Invergordon Shore Excursion: Inverness City, Cawdor Castle and Whisky Tour
We had a good experience on this tour. Our Guide was Mo who was very easy going and knowledgeable. She went out of her way to explain the stops and help us navigate the areas. Our driver Sharon was also very nice. Cawdor Castle is worth seeing however we had visited about 10 castles during our time in the UK so there was some redundancy. The stop at Inverness was good but too short. ( 60 Min) You'll only have time for either a sit down lunch or walking around to see the city. Tough to do both. The stop at Loch Ness was along the side of the road and was not in a particularity scenic spot, still it was good to see the Loch but unfortunately we didn't see Nessie. The visit to Glen Ord Distillery was fantastic. As a scotch drinker it was great to see how the whiskey was made. Andy our guide at Glen Ord was terrific and there is an opportunity to taste and buy some of their single malts

Tour 2 Cawdor Castle, Inverness, Culloden Battlefield and Loch Ness
I learned so much about the Scottish Highlands. Tour guide was amazingly prepared and connected the past history with present day Scotland. Very easy to locate your guide right at the port. I thought I got the Baku for my money.

When to Get There

The views from Inverness Castle are best on clear, sunny days. The grounds are busiest during warm summer weather, but even then, crowds are rare. The setting is romantic at sunset, when the sun’s soft rays hit the surface of the River Ness.

The History of Inverness Castle

Inverness Castle has long played a prominent role in the lore of Scotland, with a history that stretches all the way back to the 11th century. It features in both fiction and history books, having been the setting for part of Shakespeare’sMacbeth, and the Jacobites razed the castle to the ground just weeks before their final defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746.
