The Basics

The Culloden Battlefield is a must-see site for any history buff hoping to untangle the story of the British Isles. Visitors can purchase entrance tickets to find themselves on the frontlines of one of the most important battles in British history and explore the popular site at their own pace. The battlefield is also often a stop on guided day tours from Inverness and Invergordon, most of which include round-trip transportation and visits to other famous attractions, such as Loch Ness. Entry to Culloden is included in National Trust for Scotland Discover Tickets, 3- or 7-day sightseeing passes that grant visitors entry to a number of Scottish sights, including Culzean Castle, the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, and the Preston Mill. Many travelers combine a visit here with a trip to the nearby Clava Cairns, a Bronze Age site located just 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) away.

Wonderful journey in Inverness with Drew
What a wonderful time we had with Drew! Highly recommend this guided tour. Drew is a welcoming kindhearthed person with such a way of describing his home. The way the tour is built and the knowledge that Drew brings to it, makes it a memorable journey to Scotland. Side note, it is really great choice for couples because of the limited 8 seater bus which gives it a sense of "private tour"

This was a lovely tour, Mike, the guide was informative without boring us silly with facts. He was patient and adapted the tour to facilitate us and included a trip to see some Highland Coos for the toddler (and adults). The car was super clean. Thanks Mike!

Highlander Loch Ness and Culloden Battlefield 8 Seater Tour from Inverness
The views of the Highlands were spectacular! Our driver, Drew, was very informative and helpful. Visiting Culloden Battlefield was an honor and grateful for the opportunity to remember those who fought so gallantly for Scotland. Clava Cairns was fascinating. Although interesting, would rather have forgone some of the short stops along the way and spent more time at Culloden Battlefield.

Our guide George M. was fun and knowledgeable. A wonderful tour to Clava Cairns, Culloden, Loch Ness Museum and a sweet little gin distillery! He also whisked us up to Beauly Priory. A very full day with many interesting stops.

Highlander Loch Ness and Culloden Battlefield 8 Seater Tour from Inverness
Very informative tour. Our tour guide gave us plenty of historical details, and we visited all the major spots. A couple of watch-outs: * This tour isn't ideal for non-English speakers, even if a translator is on board. There was a lot of information to be shared and no time for translation. * This is not a "chill" tour. There is a lot to see and time is tight, so we couldn't enjoy the views and stops as widely as we wanted.

Robbi is the best!!!

Highlander Loch Ness and Culloden Battlefield 8 Seater Tour from Inverness
We highly recommend Robbi. Between beautiful venues his witty jokes and impromptu spouting of quotes and poetry kept us in stitches. But when it came to Culloden he sombered and stressed the importance of this sacred place. We will never forget this fantastic day!

Good tour but tries to pack too much in.

Tour 2 Cawdor Castle, Inverness, Culloden Battlefield and Loch Ness
Tour was good. Cawdor castle was very interesting and the gardens were beautiful. Culloden battlefield had some interesting history and our tour guide went into detail about it. A must stop if you’re a fan of Outlander. We only had about 40 minutes in Inverness and wished we could have spent more time exploring there than taking the longer “scenic route.” Also the stop at Loch Ness was only about 10 minutes on the side of the roadway. Enough time to take a few pictures but that is all. I would recommend not stopping at Beauly and using that time in Inverness. Plan on bringing a snack since There really is no time to get a meal along the way.

Things to Know Before You Go

  • To ensure entry, it’s best to book tickets in advance.

  • The center and the battlefield are both wheelchair accessible.

  • Audio guides are available, so visitors can take a self-guided tour of the outdoor battle site.

  • It’s best to wear warm clothing to walk around the windswept moor where the battle took place.

Things to See at the Culloden Battlefield

Visitors can amble around the battlefield in Culloden Moor, where headstones memorialize fallen soldiers and the Memorial Cairn pays homage to those who died for the Jacobite cause. The battlefield is also the setting for Leanach Cottage, a thatched residence that’s one of the few remaining examples of a common building type in the area during the early 18th century.
