Rosslyn Chapel

Chapel Loan, Edinburgh

The Basics

Rosslyn Chapel is a popular day trip from Edinburgh. Organized day tours often venture south from Edinburgh, stopping at Rosslyn Chapel, Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders, and—in some instances—at Hadrian’s Wall across the border in England. Other organized tours plot courses north from Rosslyn Chapel, making stops at Stirling Castle, the National Wallace Monument, and Dunfermline Abbey (the burial place of Robert the Bruce). Other day tours to Rosslyn Chapel stick to historic sites in and around Scotland’s capital, such as the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and Glenkinchie Distillery.

The modern, on-site visitor center at Rosslyn Chapel helps day-trippers decode the enigmatic carvings using interactive displays, as do the informative talks, which take place at the chapel several times daily.

Great tour
This was an entertaining tour, but it is a long one! Our tour guide was extremely knowledgable and had a great deal to share. I did this as a solo traveler and had a great time! Just be aware Hadrian's wall is in England, so it is a long drive to and back!

Lovely short day tour. Perfect gap filler. Look for Priorwood Gardens next door for a pretty spot to sit for lunch outside.

Rosslyn Chapel, Scottish Borders & Abbotsford House from Edinburgh
Thoroughly enjoyed our day trip with Timberbush tours. Rosslyn chapel was amazing and full of fascinating facts and legends. Melrose was pleasant for the lunch spot and Abbotsford capped off a great day. Our tour guide was Graeme, who was friendly and informative throughout. Slightly disappointed we didn’t visit the distillery due to Covid restrictions. This is only reason for a dropped star, as trip advertised on Viator as still including the whisky tasting. Overall though, great trip and well run by Timberbush.

Rosslyn Chapel and Scottish Borders Small-Group Day Tour from Edinburgh
We had a spectacular trip with John Scott as our guide. We spent day in Scottish Borders and Roslyn Chapel. We explored small villages and the countryside on our way to the chapel. John provided excellent information through stories and lived experiences. It was a beautiful part of Scotland and this was a fabulous way to see it in a small group personal way.

Rosslyn Chapel, Scottish Borders & Abbotsford House from Edinburgh
Timberbush tours gave us an amazing guide (Adrian) who told us so many stories of the history and facts about Scotland! Adrian was a very friendly and knowledgeable tour guide who was very patient with our big family. Rosslyn Chapel was a charming visit and the whisky distillery opened our eyes to the fascinating process of whisky making. The Scottish countryside was absolutely breathtaking! We would definitely come back again :)

Rosslyn Chapel, Dunfermline Abbey and Stirling Castle Day Tour from Edinburgh
I had a brilliant time on this tour. Stirling Castle and Dunfermline Abbey were amazing to see but the highlight was Rosslyn Chapel. Absolutely stunning, inside and out. Had a good amount of time at each place, didn't feel rushed at all. Driver was ok, gave some good history and played Scottish music which was great.

Rosslyn Chapel and Hadrian's Wall Small Group Day Tour from Edinburgh
Caomhain is an excellent and informative guide! His knowledge of Scottish geography and history seemed boundless. We had a couple of incidents on the tour - an inconsiderate guest who made our bus a half hour late, some unexpected road closures, and also a breakdown of the bus at the end. He handled everything graciously and made sure we got to where we needed to. Bus was fixed and we got on the road no problem. It was just a fun story to add to the trip. All around a great day out and we enjoyed it a lot. Should note the company did a great job with sanitation and social distancing on the bus too :)

The Carvings at Rosslyn Chapel

Rosslyn Chapel’s intricate carvings are the its star attraction, and have spurred many theories regarding their meaning. The carvings feature flowers and biblical scenes, tsymbols supposedly associated with the Freemasons and the Knights Templar, and mysterious native American plants that were made before Colombus’ discovery of the New World. Some posit that the Knights of Templar hid in parts of the chapel and that its vaults may hold the Holy Grail or even the body of Christ.
