Excellent day! Got to see so many waterfalls! We had an excellent driver and the van was very clean and comfy. Just be prepared for lots of driving. Lunch was good, but we were starving by the time we got back to our hotel.

This was an amazing day filled with adventure and beauty. Our Tour guide Derek was very knowledgeable and had a great energy. We also had a great guide Kaleo during the Waipio Valley part of the tour. We are very happy we took this tour because we were able to see so much in one day. The day is long but very much worth it! Definitely Recommend this tour.

The most exciting part of this tour was when Dreu took us to a private waterfalls and we could swim, kayak and water board in the pond below. DREU was an excellent tour guide very informative, knowledgeable and friendly. As the tour was a whole day affair he kept everyone engaged. I would definitely take another tour with Dreu.

It’s like a rainforest valley, waterfalls with breath taking views, this tour is great for anyone. We learned something from our energetic tour guide Dreu. He is humorous and we can feel his passion- he loves the island and his job.

Amazing trip to Hilo side of Big Island! Definitely beautiful on so many levels and quite an adventure! It is a long day so rest up! Snacks/water provided. Bring your poncho or rain jacket as the valley gets wet and rainy! Hiking sandals with straps work best in my opinion. Derek did a great job guiding us! The guy who took us down the mountain in 4X4 van was awesome story teller! Highly recommend if you have the time!

Overlooking the valley was breathtaking, but going into it...I almost have no words for it. Like it was going back in time and hearing the history of it. Tour guides were amazing. If you really want some insight and see what most tourists don't see, this tour is a must!

Longer time at private falls!

Lots of driving, which makes sense since the island is so large, but you’re in the car longer than you’re at waterfalls. A little disappointed that we were only able to get in the water at the private falls for 30 minutes after driving all day. We had fun, and got to see a lot of the island and some really cool waterfalls, and took some pictures. I wish we got to stay at the private falls longer, that was our favorite part of the tour!! Make sure to bring walking shoes, because there is a bit of walking, a good amount of stairs, and uphill portions.

This was an amazing experience. Dreu was so informative, entertaining, and funny. It's clear that he loves the island and knows so much in depth info about it. My entire group loved the entire tour. Being able to experience Waipio Valley was magical. Kaleo was awesome as our guide and driver in the valley. It was definitely a magical place, and I feel very grateful to have visited it. Swimming in the private waterfall was also really special, and I'm so glad we were able to do that. The waterfalls and lava tube were also gorgeous and fun to see/explore. Thank you for the once and a lifetime experience!

Derekk was fantastic and the tour couldn't have been more fun. Hr was full of history and facts amd kept the tour moving all day.. Douglas drove us into the valley where he was raised. He was the coolest.. everyone knew him and many were his family. It was a great mix of magnificent views and captivating Hawaiian stories passed down from generation to generatio . We are active throughout a good portion of the day, either In a 4x4 going into the valley, swimming under a waterfall or climbing through a lava tube. This is a fun, fun, fun tour!

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Waipio Valley is a must-see for adventure travelers, history buffs, or first-time visitors to the island.

  • Remember to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

  • Don’t attempt to drive a rental car into the valley; the road is extremely steep and many rental agreements prohibit it.

  • Hiking down to the black-sand beach requires a high level of physical fitness, but anyone can enjoy the views from the Waipio Valley Lookout.

How to Get There

The stunning Waipio Valley is located on the Big Island’s northern Hamakua Coast. The roads here are notoriously steep and should only be accessed by four-wheel drive, horseback, or organized tour (from Kukuihaele).

When to Get There

Since the views are one of the biggest draws, plan to visit on a clear, sunny day. November is the wettest month on the Big Island, and rain tends to impact how much of the valley is visible. Organized tours typically don’t run on Sundays.

Sacred, Mythical, Historical Waipio Valley

The Waipio Valley was once the home of many of Hawaii’s past rulers, and has great sacred and mythical significance. It was here where Kamehameha the Great (the first ruler of a unified Kingdom of Hawaii) was proclaimed the future ruler of the islands by Kakailimoku (a Hawaiian god). It’s also the site of several important Hawaiian temples, or heiaus.
