The Basics

Round-trip tours from Amsterdam offer easy access to the peninsula, and usually combine a visit to Marken with stops at Zaanse Schans (famous for its windmills) and Volendam, another fishing village home to a charming harbor and cheese factory. Private tours let you tailor your time in the village, while half-day tours allow time-limited travelers to cover more sights in less time. If you’re on a budget, take advantage of Super Saver deals and combine your trip with other must-do experiences at a reduced rate.

Fabulous trip with well informed and friendly guide, from the Windmills, cheese and clog making to the fishing island of Marken this trip is a must do on your bucket list of places to visit when in Amsterdam, you get a hell of a lot packed it on the tour and still get a little time to wonder on your own to experience the local cuisine and sights.

Laura was amazing, clearly very passionate and knowledgeable, she gave many interesting details and it was just enough to take in in one go. The trip itself was well organised logistically. Overall we enjoyed everything greatly, thank you Viator.

Great tour at a good price and time. Our guide made it very interesting. The pace is just right and a lot easier than trying to get there using local transport. Highly recommended.

Day Trip to Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken from Amsterdam
Laura is the BEST guide in AMS. The started very early and left Zaanse Schans when the sunrise began and was a really short time. Except that, the tour was good and tense as I like. free time on Volendam only. All the places were beautiful and the explanations were understood. The cheese factory was great too. Participate when asked to, so you will get a free tiny shoe. Marken is not a "must" place in my opinion.

Day Trip to Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken from Amsterdam
This was a great value for the money. We were able to explore more Holland without having to figure out the public transit outside of Amsterdam. The tour guide was very accommodating and knowledgable. We had individuals who needed extra time walking and he never made them feel rushed or pressured. Kudos for that!

Day Trip to Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken from Amsterdam
The tour to Zaanse Schans, Edam and Marken was wonderful, not so much for Volendam, maybe because it was in the winter.

Day Trip to Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam and Marken from Amsterdam
Tour guide very good and overall excellent value for money. Would suggest that they extend the trip by an hour to give extra time in Volendam to allow for more time to eat as this was a bit rushed.

When to Get There

The village is busiest in summer, especially during the day. Visit in the late afternoon to avoid the rush and enjoy sunset vistas on the Markermeer lake. Winter visitors can skip the crowds almost entirely, though be aware that many restaurants and stores close during the off season.

Marken Highlights

Though it’s not open to the public, the 19th-century Horse of Marken lighthouse (Paard Van Marken) is a national heritage site and leaves a striking mark on the skyline. The Marken Museum preserves a traditional house in all its former glory, complete with a collection of traditional clothing and an exhibition on the area’s history, while the nearby Sijtje Boes House (Kijkhuisje Sijtje Boes) contains a small museum and souvenir shop selling local handicrafts and artworks. And don’t miss the Klompenmakerij, a workshop devoted to traditional clog-making.
